THIRTY-two families ejected from a property at Brgy. Jereos in La Paz district will be transferred to a relocation site in Brgy. Lanit in Jaro, Iloilo City.
They previously occupied a privately-owned lot and were ordered to leave by the owner, according to Iloilo City Urban Poor Affairs Office (ICUPAO) head Edmundo Buensuceso.
Buensuceso said an ejectment case was filed and the demolition order took effect in September but they appealed for a one-month extension and was granted by the owner.
“The defendants submitted themselves to a voluntary transfer. So no actual demolition will take place because they will be having this relocation site ready for them,” Buensuceso said.
Buensuceso met with the families on Sept 28 to discuss with them the features of the relocation site.
The beneficiaries will be transferred to a six-hectare government-owned lot. Each family will occupy a 32- to 36-square meter area which is in accordance with the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB) rules.
They are also allowed to build a temporary shelter as the city government is still working on building permanent structures.
They are scheduled for transfer to the site any time this week as soon as ICUPAO fixed the sanitation facilities such as drums, water pipes, and Jetmatic pumps.
Power and water utilities are also available at the relocation area. Buensuceso said they can issue a certification for the relocatees to connect to Panay Electric Company (PECO) and Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD).
Roughly 100 families in the city are still pending for relocation, according to Buensuceso. These are fire victims or were affected by government projects.
The ICUPAO chairman said one major problem is the lack of available lots for relocation.
He said his office plans to request funds from the City Council for the purchase of additional lots.
