THE Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) is now the sole owner of the Iloilo Dinagyang Festival brand after its patent registration with the Intellectual Property Rights Office of the Philippines.
IDFI member Joy de Leon said the patent entitles the foundation to proprietary rights over Dinagyang-related elements like its logo and name.
“Any use or advertisement of the word Dinagyang should have prior approval of IDFI. Iloilo is not a patented word. Festival is not a patented word. It is the word Dinagyang that is patented, like the font and logo,” de Leon said.
De Leon said they could now start patenting other products related to the festival like the dance and music.
In September, IDFI organized the first Iloilo Dinagyang Rhythm and Vibes Conference 2018 with industry experts and stakeholders at the Diamond Jubilee Hall of the Department of Education (DepEd) Iloilo City Division.
Around 150 stakeholders gathered to identify the direction and identity of the 51st Dinagyang Festival, which will conclude on Jan 25-27, 2019.
Prof. Eric Divinagracia, advisory council member for the Alliance of Dinagyang Tribes in Iloilo, said the activity would be followed by the identification of the vocabulary of design, music, and choreography to create the “Dinagyang identity.”
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) lauded the conference.
“The conference makes us all stakeholders of everything that has to do with the Dinagyang Festival such as the dance, music, and costumes,” Divinagracia said.
