BACOLOD City – The price of sugar is expected to stabilize as the country enters the “ber” season, according to Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) board member Emilio “Dino” Yulo III.
Yulo, who represents sugar farmers in the SRA, said the harvest and milling season starts this month of September.
This means the tiempo muerto or “dead season for the sugar industry” officially ends, said Yulo.
Tiempo muerto started in August. It is the period between the planting and harvesting seasons of sugarcane.
It is also the time of the year when hacienda workers go to cities to look for work – as construction workers, trisikad drivers or carinderia helpers, among others.
They do this to earn income while waiting for the harvest season.
Yulo said the supply of sugar will go back to normal as the harvest season starts, thus stabilizing the product’s price.
He added that the price of sugar in the market had already gone down from P71 per kilogram to P58 per kilogram.
Suppliers are also now selling bags of sugar for P1,900 per 50 kilogram, which Yulo said is “very acceptable.”
