FATHER & SON Iloilo gubernatorial bet and 4th district Rep. Ferjenel Biron and his son, Barotac Nuevo Mayor Braeden John Biron, file their certificates of candidacy on Oct 11, 2018. The younger Biron is seeking to replace his father’s seat at the House of Representatives.

AGE should not be a gauge for competence.

This is what 24-year-old Mayor Braeden John Biron of Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo said after filing his certificate of candidacy (COC) for fourth district congressman before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Provincial Office in La Paz, Iloilo City on Oct 11, 2018.

The young mayor seeks to replace his father, incumbent Rep. Ferjenel Biron, who is running for Iloilo governor in the 2019 mid-term polls.

Mayor BJ, as he is fondly called by his family and supporters, was immersed and trained in business and politics by his father.

Thus, he said he has the knowledge and skills required of a higher public office.

“I’ve studied and I believe I am very well-equipped,” he said.

Mayor BJ had a long list of achievements on his first term as local chief executive.

Passionate about education, he used his salary as mayor for a scholarship program. He also initiated “Barotac Journey (BJ) to Excellence,” a municipal-wide competition in English, Mathematics, and Science for elementary school pupils.

The young mayor also prioritized the establishment and renovation of school buildings.

If elected in the House of Representatives, Mayor BJ said he would continue his advocacy for education on a district-wide scale.

“We never take our salary from public office, we will use it for scholarship programs and other programs in the near future,” the young mayor added.

Aside from education, he will also work on the concreting of roads, construction of public markets and municipal arenas, among others.

He said he will work directly with the Departments of Trade and Industry and Health in order to continue his father’s advocacies on entrepreneurship and healthcare.
