MANILA, Philippines — The main road in Boracay may not be ready when the island is opened to tourists on Oct. 26, an official said.

Nenette Aguirre-Graf, councilor of Malay town and president of Boracay Foundation, said there is no assurance that the widening of the 5.2-kilometer circumferential road would be completed in the next two months.

The government has alloted around P500 million for the road widening project.

However, Graf said rehabilitation works on the beachfront are almost complete. She said most of the establishments that violated the 12-meter easement rule were demolished while some business owners voluntarily removed obstructions.

She also cited improvements on the island after four months of rehabilitation, particularly in the quality of water.

“It is one of the biggest achievements of the task force,” Graf said.

Graf said several stakeholders requested the Boracay interagency task force to extend the operations of the one-stop shop until Sept. 15 to facilitate the processing of the requirements of  various establishments.

President Duterte ordered Boracay, which he described as a ”cesspool,” closed for six months to pave the way for its rehabilitation.
