The director of the Police Regional Office (PRO) in Western Visayas has been accused of “sowing false information”.
Human rights group Karapatan-Panay and families of slain communist rebels decried the recent statement of PRO-6 director Chief Superintendent John Bulalacao.
In a radio interview, Bulalacao said they received reports that those who joined the Aug. 24 protest held in front of Camp Martin Delgado, Iloilo City were given P500 and t-shirts each.
The protest was aimed at denouncing the alleged “massacre” of seven members of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP).
On Aug. 15, a purported clash between government forces and communist rebels occurred in San Jose, Antique.
The alleged 30-minute firefight resulted in the death of Jason Sanchez, Jayson Talibo, Liziel Bandiola, Karen Ceralvo, Peter Mecenas, Eldie Labinghisa, and Feliz Salditos.
Bulalacao said the seven, who were identified by NDFP as among their “unarmed and non-combatant research and propaganda staff”, were involved in extortion activities.
Among the recoveries from the scene were alleged extortion letters.
Ronny Talibo, father of Jason, said Bulalacao has become a “purveyor of false information”.
“The police and military are resorting to spreading lies to cover their massacre of our loved ones.”
According to Reylan Vergara of Karapatan-Panay, members of the San Jose Police Station, Antique Provincial Mobile Force Company, and the Philippine Army’s 301st Infantry Brigade Intelligence Task Group violated Article 3 of Protocol II to Geneva Conventions of 1949.
“They also violated RA 9851, which penalizes war crimes and other acts prohibited under the Geneva Conventions,” he added.
