TAPAZ, Capiz – Mayor Roberto “Nonong” Palomar said Tapaz, Capiz will become a city in two years or more.

Palomar said his major interests are to eradicate poverty and alleviate the plight of the farmers.

“My number one and major focus of my administration is to end poverty particularly in upland villages. In that way, insurgency will also end,” Palomar said.

Palomar said that he envisioned an airport established in Tapaz once their mission and vision materializes.

Palomar was recently elected chairman of the Central Panay Economic Unification (CPEU) in a meeting held last Sept 25, 2018 at Libacao, Aklan.

During the meeting, Mayor Denny Refol of Altavas, Aklan was elected president followed by Mayor Charito Navarosa of Libacao, Aklan as vice president.

Elected secretary was Mac Arthur Valdemar of Jamindan, Capiz; Mayor Alfonso Gubatina of Madalag, Aklan was treasurer; and Mayor Jose Christoper Varona of Sebaste, Antique as public information officer.

The Board of Directors includes Mayors Leodegario Labao of Mambusao, Capiz; and Rodell Ramos of Batan, Aklan.

The CPEU was organized in 1996 during the time of former Mayor Ethel Jinon of Jamindan, Capiz.

Tapaz is composed of 57 barangays and considered a first class municipality in the second district of Capiz. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 51,313 people.

The festivals of Tapaz are Patabang Festival in September and Sirinadya in January.

Tapaz was founded in 1835 but it continued to become part of Dumalag for many years. In 1862 and 1863, two letters were issued declaring the parish under the patronage of St. Jerome.

Both were signed by Governor General Lemery but were never executed. In 1874, Jaro Bishop Mariano Cuartero declared Tapaz an independent parish.
