The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) warned the public against enrolling in degree programs offered by higher education institutions (HEIs) that are not authorized to operate.

Prospero de Vera III, CHED officer-in-charge, said they have been receiving reports that there are unauthorized HEIs operating in the country.

He revealed that one of the reports they received was from Iloilo.

“The one in Iloilo is more dangerous because they put in their website that they are CHED-accredited with five stars,” De Vera said.

“Somebody was able to get a screenshot that they’re five-star accredited by CHED. The bad thing is, when media picked up the story, they’ve put down their website,” he added.

According to De Vera, they already issued a show-cause order against the school, and ordered their office in Western Visayas to conduct an investigation.

“We require the school to explain why it is doing it without the permission of the commission. If their explanation is not sufficient, we issue a cease and decease order to stop doing it,” he said.

De Vera advised parents and students to check their website for the list of degree programs, colleges and universities that have been evaluated and accredited by the CHED.

He said the credentials of students who graduated from unauthorized HEIs would not be recognized when thay apply, especially in government offices.
