ILOILO City was recently adjudged as finalist for four national awards.

The city government is currently preparing for the arrival of the validation team on Aug 7 for the National Literacy Awards; Aug 8 for the 2018 Seal of Good Local Governance; Galing Pook (Aug 13-14); and Most Child Friendly – Highly Urbanized Category (Sept 23-24).

Mayor Jose Espinosa III said it is the first time that the city joined the National Literacy Awards but it was immediately selected as one of the five finalists.

“The award is conducted by the Department of Education which is the prime mover. It inspects on how we go about with the aspects of education such as on alternative learning skills,” he said.

For the Gawad Pook award, the city submitted the Iloilo River project as entry.

SGLG is given to local government units (LGUs) that met the six basic elements – good financial housekeeping, disaster preparedness, social protection, business friendliness and competitiveness, environment management, and peace and order.

Espinosa thanked the private sector, the media, and other government agencies, among others in helping the city become a finalist.

“This is actually an additional feather to the cap. What is best is that we are all doing these to improve the services in the city,” he said.
