Several schools and offices in the city and province of Iloilo have been recipients of rainwater collectors.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-6) allotted P3.4 million in its 2018 Infra Program budget for the installation of 17 rainwater collection system (RWCS) units.
Engineer Oliver E. Zamora, Maintenance Division chief, said of these RWCS units, three were already installed at the DPWH-6 Office in Iloilo City and one at Ungka II Elementary School in Pavia.
Another three will be built in Brgy. Taft North and Jaro Big Market in Jaro district and Brgy. San Juan in Molo district.
Ten schools in Iloilo City and the towns of Leganes, and New Lucena are also recipients of RWCS units.
Zamora said RWCS units are being used to harvest and make use of rainwater.
Rainwater harvesting, promoted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), “is a technique of collection and storage of rainwater into natural reservoirs or tanks, or the infiltration of surface water into subsurface aquifers.”
One way of rainwater harvesting is rooftop harvesting, hence RWCS are connected to roof of the buildings so rainwater can be collected and stored.
Aside from Iloilo, the DPWH-6 will also install RWCS units in other areas in Western Visayas.
Zamora said that all the 15 District Engineering Offices in the wegion are funded an amount of P3.4 million each for the construction of RWCS units in their respective areas of jurisdiction.
The construction of rainwater collector systems is one of the DPWH-6’s priority projects.
The agency likewise intended to install RWCS units in public market areas, public schools, specifically in waterless communities as part of its Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.
