ILOILO City – Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-6 together with various District Engineering Offices (DEOs) in the region, joins this year’s celebration of International Coastal Clean-up Day, with the theme: “Tayo ang Solusyon sa Polusyon.”
The said activity was spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-6, along with other National Government Agencies (NGAs), Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), Local Government Units (LGUs), academic institutions, and other environment protectors.
A total of 150 employees from the Regional Office with personnel from Iloilo First and Iloilo City District Engineering Offices cleaned along the 5-kilometer coastline stretching from Brgy. Sto. Nino in Arevalo District to Brgy. Calumpang in Molo District, specifically from Brgy. Chapel to Coke Depot.
More than 60 sacks of garbage and other waste materials were collected by the group, segregated the biodegradable from non-biodegradable and turned them over to the DENR for disposal.

Isio Cauayan town, where 87 deployed employees gathered 61 sacks of garbage and waste materials, mostly debris of coconut and bamboo, with an estimated weight of 753 kilograms.
The conduct of International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 470, series of 2003, declaring every third Saturday of September of every year as International Coastal Clean-up Day in observance of the Global Coastal Clean-up celebration, wherein DPWH joins the nation in celebration of the said event to promote better ocean health and environmental consciousness.
International Coastal Clean-up is the largest volunteer effort for ocean’s health. People around the world gather on beaches, coasts, rivers, waterways and underwater dive sites to remove trash; and record information on the debris collected for better waste management policies and in stirring environmental consciousness among the people.
Taking part in this world’s largest volunteer effort on behalf of ocean and waterway health fosters awareness to the local people in preserving and maintaining healthier ocean environment. Exercising our environmental responsibility in keeping the shoreline free from trash will highly contribute on the world’s effort in making our coastal areas clean and protecting the marine environment.
