ILOILO – Classes at Lambunao National High School in Lambunao, Iloilo were abruptly suspended yesterday morning after components of an improvised explosive device were found in the girls’ toilet.

The school’s utility personnel Robert Araneta alerted teachers after spotting the device inside a paper bag while cleaning the toilet around 9:50 a.m.

Classes were stopped and students were ordered to stay away from the area, according to Chief Inspector Jogen Suegay, Lambunao police chief.

Policemen recovered a cardboard tube filled with sand and wrapped in wires and electrical tape.

There was also a circuit board and cellular phone battery.

“According to the EOD (Explosives and Ordnance Division) personnel of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office, those were bomb components but weren’t dangerous. Those couldn’t explode for lack of a blast cap or detonator,” said Suegay.

Why would anyone bring bomb components in school? Suegay said the police would be coordinating with school administration in the investigation.

He said more policemen would be posted near Lambunao National High School and students may be subjected to inspection.

Lambunao is 47 kilometers northwest of Iloilo City. It shares borders with the provinces of Antique and Capiz.
