Residents and visitors have “nothing to worry about” in terms of the peace and order situation in Iloilo City.
“The city remains generally peaceful and safe,” said Senior Supt. Henry Bińas, former director of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO).
Alarmed over the recent spate of “riding-in-tandem” killings in the metropolis, the City Council on Tuesday, Sept. 18, held a dialogue with officials of ICPO.
Two Tokhang surrenderers were gunned down in the districts of Molo and La Paz on Sept. 7.
On Sept. 11, a tricycle driver, also a drug surrenderer, was shot dead in Jaro district.
Bińas, who was reassigned to the Police Regional Office (PRO-6) last week, said the investigations especially on the incidents involving the motorcycle-riding shooters are ongoing.
Meanwhile, Senior Supt. Martin Defensor, the new ICPO director, assured that they are in control of the situation in the city.
Based on data from ICPO, a total of 5,600 crime incidents occurred in Iloilo City from January 1 to Sept. 13, 2018. The number was lower by 24.66 percent compared to the same period a year ago with 7,433.
The monthly crime rate of the city went down by 24. 71 percent. The PNP, in a report by Rappler, said crime rate is “computed by dividing crime volume by the population in an area. The result is then multiplied by 100,000. This formula measures the ratio of the crime to every 100,000 residents.”
Since January this year, 131 crimes (on average) per 100,000 population of Iloilo City have been committed each month up to August 2018.
Last year, the city posted an average monthly crime rate of 174.
