Iloilo City’s river rehabilitation project won the prestigious Galing Pook Award.

The Iloilo-Batiano River Development Project was hailed as one of the 10 outstanding local governance programs this year.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III received a Galing Pook marker and a check worth P100 thousand at Novotel Manila Araneta Center in Quezon City on Thursday, Oct. 11

The river rehabilitation project was the city’s sole entry to the 2018 Galing Pook Awards.

According to Espinosa, the project started in 2011.

The city government relocated thousands of informal settlers along waterways to housing projects.

The national government also funded the flood-control project, which paved way for the establishment of Iloilo Esplanade, the longest walkway in the country.

In 2013, the Iloilo River became one of four finalists vying for the Thiess International Riverprize award.
