ILOILO City – Cong. Jerry Treñas is the voters’ preferred choice for city mayor, a recent survey showed.

In face-to-face interviews as method of data collection, 62.2 percent of respondents expressed preference for Treñas – more than double the number of respondents (29.5 percent) that said they would vote for incumbent Mayor Jose Espinosa III.

The survey of Random Access Consultants Inc. (RACI) was conducted from July 27 to 29, 2018 in 60 barangays.

The 600 respondents were residents who were at least 18 years old and registered voters.

Across seven districts, Treñas dominated Espinosa. These were the voters’ preferences:

Arevalo

TREÑAS – 70 percent

ESPINOSA – 26.7 percent

Undecided – 3.3 percent

City Proper

TREÑAS – 65.6 percent

ESPINOSA – 31.1 percent

Undecided – 3.3 percent

Jaro

TREÑAS – 60.7 percent

ESPINOSA – 31.3 percent

Undecided – 8 percent

La Paz

TREÑAS – 67.1 percent

ESPINOSA – 22.9 percent

Undecided – 10 percent

Lapuz

TREÑAS – 70 percent

ESPINOSA – 24 percent

Undecided – 6 percent

Mandurriao

TREÑAS – 50 percent

ESPINOSA – 40 percent

Undecided – 10 percent

Molo

TREÑAS – 58.2 percent

ESPINOSA – 27.3 percent

Undecided – 14.45 percent

Overall, six in 10 voters preferred Treñas, the survey showed, while only three in 10 voters preferred Espinosa.

The overall undecided in this survey was at 8.3 percent.

With a margin of error of ± 4 percent, the survey’s level of confidence was pegged at 95 percent.

Multi-stage probability sampling was used.

Treñas served as city mayor for nine years (three terms) from 2001 to 2010 prior to his election as congressman in 2010.

He handily won his two reelection bids in 2013 and 2016.

Espinosa, on the other hand, was elected vice mayor in 2010 and won his reelection bids in 2013 and 2016. Last year by operation of law, he became the city mayor after then mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog was dismissed by the Office of the Ombudsman for unexplained wealth.
