ILOILO CITY Mayor Jose Espinosa III assured that Senator Cynthia Villar, chair of the Senate committee on agriculture, has guaranteed the P100-million budget for the repair and rehabilitation of the city slaughterhouse in Tacas, Jaro district.
“Gin-hambal ko na to kay Sen. Villar ang ginapangayo ta nga P100 million for the slaughterhouse and positive ang iya response,” Espinosa said.
The mayor announced on Monday that he will be calling Villar to request for funds for the rehabilitation of the slaughterhouse.
He added that Villar promised to include the abattoir funds in the next budget hearing.
“They will be conducting budget hearing starting next month and bantayan gid ni Sen. Villar nga ma-include ang aton na P100 million which will come from the meat inspection administration through General Appropriations Act,” he explained.
During the regular session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod on Tuesday, Councilor Mandrie Malabor, committee on markets and slaughterhouse chair, reiterated that the slaughterhouse needs to be rehabilitated first.
“Ginauna ta ang slaughterhouse kay we need gid to rehabilitate ina. Damo na kita restaurants since fast developing na kita and ang mga food establishments naga-require sang Double A nga slaughterhouse. Need gid i-rehabilitate para ang meat nagasulod diri indi na maghalin sa iban nga provinces,” Malabor said.
Recently, the SP passed a resolution requesting the City Mayor thru its finance committee to allocate funds for the essential repair/rehabilitation of Iloilo City’s public markets and abattoir to remedy its woeful state.
The resolution stipulated that the city abattoir and public markets are obviously neglected, deteriorating, like a social malady because of its ramshackle facilities and mismanagement.
According to the resolution, the city abattoir, due to its poor structural facilities and equipment, causes delayed and limited slaughtering activities of cattle’s and hogs resulting to huge losses in monthly revenues.
Moreover, the slaughterhouse also failed twice in its accreditation bid and was not able to secure a Double-A or Triple-A classification from the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).
