Landslide caused this road distortion in an uphill area in Nabas, Aklan. ELMER PELILIO/AKLAN FORUM JOURNAL

NABAS, Aklan – A portion of a major road in this town subsided as rain-triggered landslide hit the uphill area where it is located.

Due to this, the road section will be closed beginning today to pave the way for repair works, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The structural distortion is 15 kilometers from Barangay Caticlan, Malay, Aklan – the main jump-off point to Boracay Island.

The Caticlan port also caters to roll-on, roll-off vessels transporting passengers and cargoes to Batangas and Mindoro.

The road is prone to landslides, especially during the rainy season, posing danger to motorists, the DPWH said.

With the road closure, trucks carrying heavy loads – like 10-wheelers – bound for Malay and Buruanga are advised to take the longer Pandan junction.

From Nabas, they are advised to take the Libertad-Buruanga route.

Other motorists on board light vehicles going to and from Malay, on the other hand, may pass through the road’s one-lane unaffected section.

Aklan District Engineer Noel Fuentebella said warning and directional signs are installed along roads to inform the public about the closure.

DPWH maintenance crew will also guide motorists in taking alternative routes.
