ILOILO City Mayor Jose Espinosa III said only members of the Metro Iloilo Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) can dump wastes at the sanitary landfill in Brgy. Calajunan in Mandurriao district.

MIGEDC members are the towns of Oton, San Miguel, Pavia, Leganes, and Sta. Barbara in Iloilo; and Jordan, Buenavista, Nueva Valencia, San Lorenzo and Sibunag in Guimaras.

“I would prefer that only those within the vicinity can throw their garbage in the city. As much as possible we would like to help the neighbouring towns, the MIGEDC, which is also part of our development,” Espinosa said.

The City Council earlier approved the request of Leganes to dump residual waste in Calajunan as it is still building its own waste-to-energy facility.

The Council approved the resolution authorizing Espinosa to sign a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the municipality of Leganes relative to the proposal.

Espinosa said he will soon meet with Mayor Jose Romi Marañon and may issue an executive order regarding the new schemes between the city and Leganes.

He also stressed that there will be certain conditions in the memorandum such as the corresponding fee and schedule of the dumping of garbage.

Councilor Plaridel Nava earlier said the memorandum should stipulate that Leganes observes proper waste segregation in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Act.

The mayor downplayed talks that Leganes’ case would serve as precedent to other towns also making the same request.

He also shrugged off the possibility of the city being dubbed as a “dumping site.”

“There is nothing wrong as long as we manage it accordingly,” the mayor said.
