OLORFUL floats will hit the streets of Iloilo City during the Parade of Lights in the 2019 edition of the Dinagyang Festival.

SPECTATORS can expect a bright and colorful float parade during the 2019 Dinagyang Festival.

Ramon Cua Locsin, Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) president, said they decided to continue the Parade of Lights after it “turned out to be very successful” when it was held for the first time last year as one of the highlights of the 50th Dinagyang Festival.

“We were surprised last year because there were a lot of spectators. And we have talked with Mayor Jose Espinosa III and he also wants to bring back the event,” he said.

Locsin added that they have contacted different offices and businesses which already showed interest to join the parade.

The Parade of Lights features elaborately decorated floats with traditional themes in accord with the Dinagyang theme. Participants include corporate sponsors of the festival, participating schools, and civic organizations, among others.

Last year, the parade started along Sen. Benigno Aquino Avenue (Diversion Road) up to the Iloilo Business Park.

The entries were judged according to splendor/grandiosity, uniqueness and originality, lighting effects, workmanship and creativity, and originality. The winners received cash prizes and trophies.

“I have talked with the Imperial Group and they already agreed to put up a float for Grand Xing Hotel. We hope more companies will join to make the parade more exciting,” he said.

Last September, the IDFI organized the first Iloilo Dinagyang Rhythm and Vibes Conference 2018 with industry experts and stakeholders at the Diamond Jubilee Hall of the Department of Education (DepEd) Iloilo City Division.

The conference aims to assure a “more authentic” cultural festival and establish an “identity” for Dinagyang.

“In fact, Dinagyang has its own music. And it is even used by other festivals when they join in Aliwan Festival. So we want to strengthen that identity,” Locsin said.
