Phivolcs corrects earthquake bulletins

The epicenter of the three strong earthquakes that jolted Iloilo and other parts of Western Visayas on Monday, Nov. 5, was located in the town of Leon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).


In its updated bulletins, Phivolcs said the epicenter of the first quake that occurred at 7:45 a.m. was traced 10 kilometers southwest of Leon, Iloilo, not in San Jose, Antique.


It also lowered the magnitude to 3.9 from 4.7.


The second quake with a magnitude of 4.4 struck at 7:46 a.m. Its epicenter was located 12 kilometers southeast of Leon, not in Sibunag, Guimaras.


The epicenter of the 4.8 quake that hit at 10:54 a.m. was recorded 10 kilometers southwest of Leon, not in Guimbal.


All the quakes, according to engineer Reynaldo Antioquia of Phivolcs-Capiz, were tectonic in origin.


Phivolcs is one of the attached agencies of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
