Eliminate sugary drinks in your diet.
This, according to Philippine Heart Association (PHA) president Dr. Nannette Rey, is one way to prevent heart disease.
The PHA has been encouraging the public to stop consuming sugary drinks as part of its healthy lifestyle advocacy.
“Ang kinacampaign natin is zero sugary drinks. Ibig sabihin wala ng soft drinks or soda, juices, ice tea. Remove them from your diet. Water nalang tayo,” Rey said.
“If you want to drink fruit juice, magsqueeze ka nalang ng fresh fruits,” she suggested.
According to Rey, soft drinks are rich in sugar.
She said a 12-ounce can of coke contains nine teaspoons of sugar.
Rey noted that diabetes incidence in the country is steadily increasing.
“Ang diabetes ay isa sa mga dahilan kung bakit maaga tayong nagkakaroon ng sakit sa puso,” she said.
Rey also encouraged the public to exercise, eat fruits and vegetables and stop smoking.
“Kumain tayo ng prutas at gulay and magexercise, mga 30 minutes to one hour. Ang smoking tigilan na kasi wala siyang benefit sa health kahit isa. Harm lang talaga ang dulot ng pananigarilyo,” she said.
Rey was in the province of Guimaras last Sunday, Sept. 2. They conducted a CPR training in the town of Jordan.
