THREE more towns in Iloilo province have secured approval of their respective 10-year solid waste management plans, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) said.
PENRO’s Senior Environmental Management Specialist Mitzi Peñaflorida said the towns of Ajuy, Mina, and Maasin added to the 21 towns with approved solid waste management plans.
The 21 municipalities with approved solid waste management plans submitted to the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) are:
Anilao
Badiangan
Banate
Batad
Calinog
Concepcion
Component city of Passi
Dingle
Dueñas
Igbaras
Janiuay
Miag-ao
Lambunao
New Lucena
Pavia
Pototan
San Dionisio
San Rafael
Santa Barbara
Tubungan
Zarraga
These municipalities submitted the 2017-2026 plan, which contains the data of waste analysis and characterization study, municipalities’ practices on solid waste management, volume of wastes disposed and diverted.
“Diversion means indi sya mag-kadto sa final disposal site sang ila dumping site. Damo sila alternative plan kun paano i-address ang basura i-divert nga indi mag-kadto didto sa final disposal site,” Peñaflorida explained.
By 2026, all households in these municipalities are expected to observe proper waste disposal.
“At least with approved plan may guide na ang towns to implement solid waste management program,” Peñaflorida said.
However, the budget for the program depends on the municipalities especially that the program will demand personnel services.
“So kun wala tawo despite ano pa na programs and activities kun wala tawo ga-handle, wala personnel maga-assist sa imo sa pag-implement sang program, indi masustain ang solid waste management program,” she said.
Also, the town’s budget that will be allocated in this program will cover the purchase of facilities and alternative technologies to address solid waste problems.
The next round of management plan approval is on Nov 13-16, 2018.
The NSWC is composed of representatives from member agencies Department of Health, Department of Agriculture, Department of Public Works and Highways, Metro Manila Development Authority, among others.
