The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) approved on Tuesday, Nov. 6, a resolution allotting funds for the rehabilitation of public markets and slaughterhouse in Iloilo City.

“The city’s public markets and abattoir are vital public utilities and economic enterprises that are effective catalysts/contributors to local development,” said Councilor Armand Parcon, the author of the resolution.

“These must be kept clean, safe, and conducive for the general public at all times,” he stressed.

Parcon reallocated the P85 million that was slashed by the City Council from Supplemental Budget No.3 requested by Mayor Jose Espinosa III.

The amount was originally intended for the site development for the planned Iloilo City Sports Arena in Barangay San Pedro, Molo district (P35 million), and the construction of a multipurpose building at the back of City Hall.

The SP also directed the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO), which is headed by Jose Ariel Castañeda, to coordinate with the City Engineer’s Office in coming up with an “updated detailed master plan regarding the repair/rehab of all public markets and slaughterhouse in case the city government opts for repair or complete rehabilitation.”

Recently, a series of investigations in aid of legislation on the “disgusting state” of the city’s public markets and slaughterhouse was conducted by the SP.

Among the problems identified during the investigations were leaking roofs, faulty drainage system, unsanitary wet sections, dilapidated facilities, stagnant waste water, and lack of cooperation among market personnel and vendors.
