Street-dancing to open Kalibo Ati-Atihan Oct. 26

KALIBO, Aklan – The opening salvo of the Ati-Atihan Festival in this capital town will feature dancing on the streets.


Close to 40 Ati-Atihan tribes and groups will assemble on XIX Martyrs and Archbishop Reyes streets in the afternoon of on Oct. 26 and will perform the traditional street dance along major streets.


A special showcase of the tribes and groups, the opening salvo dubbed “Tamboe Sadsad” will give locals and foreigners a preview of what the festival would be like.


Organizers of the Kalibo Ati-Atihan Festival set various official activities for the celebration in honor of Santo Niño de Kalibo from Jan. 11 to 20 next year.


Following Tamboe Sadsad is the signing of a memorandum of agreement on media coverage between the Kalibo Santo Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi) and GMA Network at the Pastrana Park.


The 16 finalists of Mutya it Kalibo Ati-Atihan will have their first public appearance at the opening salvo.


In addition Kasafi will also throw a “Kasadyahan Party” featuring popular DJs at the Magsaysay Park starting 6 p.m. to cap the opening-salvo day.


Firearms and other deadly weapons and bottled beverage will be banned during the street-dancing, Superintendent Richard Mepania, Kalibo police head, told a recent security conference.


Smoking in public places is also prohibited.


Spontaneous street-dancing and drumbeating among merrymakers on major streets are allowed until 10 p.m. Traffic rerouting will be implemented on streets leading to the Pastrana Park.


In January festival-related activities include a Santo Niño de Kalibo procession, paeapak, chapel visitation of Santo Niño, novena to Senor Santo Niño, street-dancing contest, float parade, food stalls, day and night merrymaking, exhibits, beauty pageant, and car and bike shows, among others.
