BORACAY ISLAND – The capacity of other tourist spots should be determined, to prevent environmental strain that forced the six-month-long shutdown of this island, a lawmaker said Friday.

Boracay, which was reopened Friday, has a “carrying capacity” of 54,000 people at a time, but it swelled to as many as 75,000 at a time before the shutdown.

Madami tayong destinations na hindi natin alam carrying capacity but we are already promoting it, developing it without knowing kung ano ba talaga yung kakayahan ngdestination,” said Sen. Nancy Binay, who heads the Senate committee on tourism.

The Senate is also eyeing the creation of an office that will administer Boracay, said Binay, whose committee investigated the environmental degradation on the island.

The government shut Boracay in April after President Rodrigo Duterte said pollution turned its waters into “cesspools.”
