ILOILO City lone district Rep. Jerry Treñas has left the ruling Partido-Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
Treñas will now run for mayor under the National Unity Party (NUP) along with some members of his lineup.
“Tanan sa slate naton nagNUP man except Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon and Rudolph Ganzon nga mapabilin sa Timawa Party,” Treñas said.
The congressman said he left the administration party after he was advised to join a party that has an alliance with the Hugpong Pagbabago of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, daughter of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte
They also have other choices such as the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) and LakasChristian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD).
“We got a lot of choices. And we have decided to join NUP because its president is Deputy Speaker Fredenil Castro who is from Capiz… And PDP does not have an alliance with Hugpong until now,” he said.
He said an alliance with Hugpong would ensure that the programs of the administration would be sustained.
“Amo na may alliance kita para mapadayon ang maayo nga administration sang president,” he said.
As to PDP-Laban, Treñas said the party does not have an official candidate. But it is rumored that Pacita Gonzales, wife of the late Raul Gonzales Sr., got PDP-Laban’s certificate of nomination and acceptance (CONA) for mayor.
“Ang naintindihan ko wala man sila kandidato,” he said.
Treñas’ lineup has an acronym JJJ-JGGHETZ-DBP:
Jamjam Baronda – congresswoman
Jerry Treñas – mayor
Jeffrey Ganzon – vice mayor
For city councilors:
Javellana, Jojo Ganzon, Rudolph Jeffrey Garcia, Gilbert Hervias, Reyland Estante, Ely Treñas, Jay Zaldivar, Allan Duron, Romel Baronda, Lady Julie Grace Parcon, Armand
The Treñas camp will file their certificates of candidacy (COCs) on Oct 17, 2018. They will first attend a 7:30 a.m. mass at Santa Maria Parish before walking to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Iloilo City office at the Iloilo Terminal Market.
Treñas said he does not have the estimate of supporters who will join them but it will include their family and friends.
Meanwhile, Treñas denied that he had a hand in the recent revamp at the City Council where councilors Ed Peñaredondo and R Leoni Gerochi were stripped of their committee chairmanships.
Peñaredondo and Gerochi are allies of City Mayor Jose Espinosa III who is facing Treñas in the mayoralty race.
Espinosa and Treñas are brothers-in-law (mag-bilas). “I assure you it’s not true,” he said.
The Council approved during their regular session on Oct 9, 2018 the proposed resolution sponsored by Councilor Plaridel Nava declaring vacant and filling up the positions of floor leader, assistant floor leader, and chairmanship of four committees namely Committee on Rules, Ordinances, Resolutions, Style, Justice and Legal Affairs; Committee on Appropriations;
Committee on Urban Planning, Housing and Land Development, Zoning, Expropriation, Assessment and Land Acquisition; and Committee on Transportation, Energy and Public Utilities.
Peñaredondo is formerly the floor leader and the chair of the committees on Rules, Appropriations, and Zoning while Gerochi used to be the assistant floor leader and Transportation committee chair.
It was rumored that Treñas and Nava struck a “working alliance” in effecting the revamp.
“I have not yet talked to Councilor Nava. But I will not be averse to talking to him,” the congressman said.
Nava had been criticizing Treñas for the latter’s alleged neglect of the illegal drug problem in the city.
