REPRESENTATIVE Jerry P. Treñas has named former City Councilor Julienne “Jam-Jam” Baronda as Iloilo City’s “first congresswoman-to-be.”
Treñas made the statement during the oath taking of the Blue Angels Association in Brgy. Cubay Jaro on Sept 22, 2018.
“Ang aton nga napilian magpadalagan congressman, the first congresswoman-to-be of Iloilo City, Jam-Jam Baronda,” Treñas said in his message.
In a phone interview with reporters Saturday evening, Treñas, who is seeking the mayorship in May 2019, said he will make an official pronouncement of his congressional bet when the “right time comes.”
When asked about the probability of Baronda as his candidate, he responded it is “somewhere 60 percent.”
Baronda said she will wait for the official declaration of Treñas naming her as his running mate.
Last Saturday’s pronouncement may have put to rest speculations on Treñas congressional bet.
Earlier, he offered the post to his brother-in-law and incumbent Iloilo City Mayor Jose “Joe” Espinosa III but the latter declined.
Instead, Espinosa has decided to face Treñas in the mayoral race.
Former city councilor Nielex “Lex” Tupas also said he received a word from the congressman as regards the congressional post.
Meanwhile, apart from Baronda, the incumbent congressman also tapped Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon as his running mate.
While it has yet to be made official, it is believed that the Baronda-Treñas-Ganzon ticket for 2019 elections has already been ironed out.
In a radio interview, Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon said Treñas repeatedly endorsed Baronda for congresswoman in all six events they joined on Saturday.
Ganzon added that their lineup for next year is almost complete.
