‘WEAVING OF CULTURES’: 11 sister cities join Iloilo City Charter Day

ELEVEN sister cities, both local and international, are joining Iloilo City’s 81st Charter Day celebration today, Aug 25, 2018.

They have confirmed their attendance during the Sister Cities Night at 6 p.m.

The sister-cities are Stockton City, California; General Santos, South Cotabato; Agat, Guam; Dededo, Guam; Mandaue City, Cebu; Quezon City, Manila; Bacolod City, Negros Occidental; Mun. Rosario, Batangas; San Juan, Metro Manila; Tacurong, Mindanao; and Koronadal, Mindanao.

This year’s celebration is themed “Weaving of Cultures” which aims to showcase Ilonggo culture and build up strong relationships between Iloilo City and its sister cities for cultural and economic exchanges.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III said this year’s celebration gave honor to all the sectors in the society as well as the cities partners in development.

Espinosa said the Sister Cities Night is a showcase of the city’s colorful culture.

The celebration will kick off with a street dancing parade at 7 a.m. to be participated by 42 competing groups at the City Hall Ground, Plaza Libertad.

City Administrator Atty. Hernando Galvez said the participants are Iloilo City Hall departments, various public and private schools, and government agencies, among others.

At 6 p.m., the Ateneo Lady Eagles will face the Bangko Perlas Volleyball Super Stars at the Philippine Science High School Gym in Bito-on, Jaro.

“We also invited a celebrity to add color to the celebration,” Galvez said.

Other pre-event activities include debate tournament among high school students, Double Dragon Boat race, fun ride, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) volleyball and basketball games; LGBT pageant, Iloilo City Anti-Smoking ASEAN Reach Out, car show, Senior Citizen’s Day, mass wedding, family day for 4Ps beneficiaries, and Lin-Ay pageant, among others.
